Listening to Mothers III: New Mothers Speak Out Survey and Report (2013)

Listening to Mothers III: New Mothers Speak Out combines results of an initial national survey of 2400 women and a follow-up survey with 1072 of the initial participants. The initial survey was reported in Listening to Mothers III: Pregnancy and Birth (May 2013). Both reports explore the experiences of mothers who gave birth in U.S. hospitals from mid-2011 to mid-2012. The new companion report answers two key questions: How are women faring in the postpartum period? And what are their views of maternity care and their role in it? In addition, the final appendix includes additional items relating to the women’s pregnancy and birth experiences, which were reported extensively in the previous survey report.

Areas covered in Listening to Mothers III: New Mothers Speak Out include:
  • Maternal and child well-being — postpartum care, breastfeeding, weight loss, mental health, and more
  • Family and relationships — sharing child care, support, attachment, and more
  • Employment status during pregnancy and after birth — maternity leave, child care, health insurance, and more
  • Views of maternity care quality and engagement — perspectives on recently received care and in general, support for birth choices, level of activation, and more
  • Some important variation — comparisons by race/ethnicity and primary payer of maternity care services
  • Trends across all three surveys – comparisons of women's postpartum experiences as well as attitudes, beliefs, and preferences
  • Additional findings on pregnancy and birth — information sources, rate of spontaneous onset of labor, and more (Appendix D)

Childbirth Connection's Listening to Mothers III: New Mothers Speak Out survey was conducted by Harris Interactive and was funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.

The Listening to Mothers III National Advisory Council provided guidance on the development, implementation and reporting of the Listening to Mothers III survey. Council members and the organizations they represented at the time of their participation are listed here.
