Marc J.N.C. Keirse, MD
Marc Keirse graduated in medicine at Leuven University in Belgium in the late 1960s. After initial clinical work, he went to the Unilever Laboratories in Rotterdam where he developed the first assay for prostaglandin F, thus establishing his lifelong interest in the physiological and therapeutic characteristics of prostaglandins. For five years in the mid-1970s, with support from the British Medical Research Council, Marc did laboratory and clinical studies on parturition with Alec Turnbull and Anne Anderson in Cardiff and Oxford. In the late 1970s he moved to the University of Leiden in the Netherlands, and was appointed to the Chair of Obstetrics there in the early 1980s. During the mid-1980s he was a member of the editorial team responsible for preparing Effective Care in Pregnancy and Childbirth. Marc is currently Chair of Obstetrics at Flinders University in Adelaide, Australia.
