Your Baby in the Second Trimester of Pregnancy


At the start of the second trimester, you will feel your baby's movements, which get stronger as the baby grows bigger.
  • At the end of the fourth month, your baby weighs about five ounces. Her kidneys begin to produce urine. During visits to your health care provider, you will be able to hear your baby's heartbeat more clearly. Your baby can move and hear your voice.
  • By the end of the fifth month, you'll be able to feel light movements (called quickening) of your fetus. Your baby is sleeping and waking at regular intervals, and is more active than before. At this point, she is about nine inches long and weighs about one-half to one pound.
  • During the sixth month, your baby's features become clearer. Eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair are developing. She also has finger and toe prints, and may be kicking strongly. By the end of the second trimester (28 weeks pregnant), your baby weighs as much as two pounds and is about 11 inches long.

Listening to MothersSM III is the third national survey exploring women’s experiences in pregnancy and childbirth. Commissioned by Childbirth Connection, conducted by Harris Interactive, and funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the survey polled 2,400 women who gave birth in U.S. hospitals from 2011 to 2012. Results show that medically intensive experiences are typical, and evidence-based practices are underutilized. Childbearing women need better support and knowledge to navigate their maternity care.
