Forum & SupportersThe Listening to Mothers I Forum was held at the Manhattan Center in New York City on October 24, 2002, to release results of Listening to Mothers: The First National U.S. Survey of Women's Childbearing Experiences. More than 300 people attended this historic event including health professionals, mothers, advocates and media representatives. Dr. Eugene Declercq, chairperson of the Listening to Mothers National Advisory Council, presented the survey results. Pulitzer Prize winning journalist and best-selling author Anna Quindlen gave the keynote address. A panel of health professionals and mothers engaged in dialogue with the audience about survey results and their implications. At the Forum, Penny Simkin received Childbirth Connection's Carola Warburg Rothschild Award for outstanding contributions to the health and well-being of women and their families. The award recognizes her major and influential contributions in many areas of central concern to childbearing women, including: labor support and labor companions, labor pain relief and comfort measures, physiologic labor and labor progress, childbirth satisfaction, women's long-term memories of their childbirth experiences, children's experience of birth, and childbearing experiences of survivors of sexual abuse. Listening to MothersSM III is the third national
survey exploring women’s experiences in pregnancy and childbirth.
Commissioned by Childbirth Connection, conducted by Harris Interactive, and
funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the survey polled 2,400 women who gave
birth in U.S. hospitals from 2011 to 2012. Results show that medically
intensive experiences are typical, and evidence-based practices are
underutilized. Childbearing women need better support and knowledge to
navigate their maternity care.
