National Advisory Council

The Listening to Mothers I National Advisory Council was convened to provide guidance on the planning, implementation, and reporting of the Listening to Mothers I survey. To ensure expertise on the full range of survey topics and involvement of key organizations, the multi-disciplinary advisory group included representatives from many leading professional organizations involved with maternal and child health (see list of members below). The group met for a national planning meeting, and members continued to provide guidance at key points throughout the process, including development of the survey questionnaire, survey report, and survey recommendations (PDF).

Listening to MothersSM III is the third national survey exploring women’s experiences in pregnancy and childbirth. Commissioned by Childbirth Connection, conducted by Harris Interactive, and funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation, the survey polled 2,400 women who gave birth in U.S. hospitals from 2011 to 2012. Results show that medically intensive experiences are typical, and evidence-based practices are underutilized. Childbearing women need better support and knowledge to navigate their maternity care.
