Listening to Mothers III Survey and Report (2013)

Listening to Mothers III is the third in a series of landmark studies that poll American women about their maternity experiences. The report summarizes the results of a survey of 2,400 mothers who gave birth in hospitals in 2011 and 2012. Like the first two of the series, Listening to Mothers III asks women about their experiences in pregnancy and childbirth, enabling for comprehensive comparisons over time. New content related to pressing issues in maternity care includes an in-depth section on shared decision-making among other topics.

Areas covered in Listening to Mothers III include:
  • Planning for pregnancy and the pregnancy experience — prenatal care, childbirth education, sources of information about pregnancy and birth and more
  • Women's experience giving birth — caregivers, labor induction and other interventions, supportive care during birth, vaginal and cesarean delivery, and more
  • Home with a new baby — breastfeeding, physical and mental well-being, paying for maternity care and more
  • Choice, control, knowledge and decision making — shared decision making, pressure to have interventions, knowledge of the impact of interventions and more
  • Some important variation — comparisons between women with vaginal birth and cesarean section, first-time and experienced mothers, and by race/ethnicity and payer source
  • Trends across all three surveys – comparisons of women's prenatal, birth and postpartum experiences as well as attitudes, beliefs, and preferences.

Childbirth Connection's Listening to Mothers III survey was conducted by Harris Interactive and was funded by the W.K. Kellogg Foundation.
